SKATE SHARPENING EXPLAINED

Looking for more information about skate sharpening and how to choose the right radius? Everything you need to know is explained below.

Grinding Ring Radius

The Grinding Ring radius is simply how deep the groove is that is cut into the skate blade from sharpening. The deeper the cut, the more grip the blade will have on the ice. The shallower the cut, the more glide the blade will have on the ice. A smaller Radius Ring (3/8”) will cut deeper into the blade creating more bite, while a larger Radius Ring (5/8”) will not cut as deep, creating more glide.

Choosing the Right Radius

Choosing the right radius is a matter of personal preference, whether you want more bite or more glide. The most common Grinding Ring radius is 1/2”. We recommend 1/2” for most youth players (less body weight) and then increasing the radius (5/8”) as the player gets larger.

FAQs

How often should skates be sharpened?

If you or your child skates once or twice a week, we recommend sharpening your skates once a month. For those skating more than twice a week, consider sharpening your skates every two weeks. Of course, you can adjust based on your schedule, the ice conditions, and what feels right for you.
.

What is the most common sharpening option?

1/2” is our standard sharpening. When in doubt, stick to 1/2”.
.

I have new skates, are my blades sharp?

No, new skates do not come pre-sharpened. Since the blades on new skates have never been sharpened before, we need to create a new edge. To achieve this, we double the number of passes we make across the blade to ensure it is properly sharpened.
